Program Experience

There are two branches to the educational enrichment portion of this internship: 1) fireside chats with each PI, and 2) courses in data science

Fireside Chats

We ask each PI to join our trainee cohort once during the program for a “fireside chat” where they discuss their path to becoming a doctor, their life in medicine, and their current research. Students are encouraged to ask questions during these chats and have reported these candid discussions as one of the most informative and enjoyable parts of the internship.

Courses in Data Science

Data Camp

Interns are awarded a year-long subscription to DataCamp where they cover data science basics during the initial training portion of the internship. Materials include data analysis and visualization in excel, introduction to statistics in spreadsheets, and quantitative methods for biology. Not all interns will be coming in with the same level of data science experience, so interns are also given the option to expand their knowledge of data science with DataCamp courses in R and Python.

Coursera

Interns also have the option to take more specific data science courses (funded by the TechFoundation) on Coursera. Past interns have opted to take classes such as on topics such as deep learning which they then utilized in their research with their PI.
